Seagull

What ancient design
birthed in you,
inherent in your genes,
brings you here
every winter?
Though I cannot know,
I am glad you are here.
I love to see you
flying,
the sun glistening
off your snow-white wings
and snow-white body
as you fly slowly,
wings beating rhythmically,
acrobat in the sky,
and then you soar,
floating motionless in mid-air,
then up and up
and down and down.
Your ringing laughter
calls out
with such seeming joy
as if to say to me –
earthbound –
that you know the delight
of flight,
a delight
I may never know,
a freedom
I may never see.
Oh, seagull,
I welcome you back
each winter,
and I lament your leaving
each spring,
but your joyous laughter
calling out
as you dip and soar
will stay with me
always,
and even though
you come and go
like the seasons,
a part of you –
your ringing laughter,
your joy,
and your spirit –
will abide with me
always.
