What ancient design
birthed in you,
inherent in your genes,
brings you here
every winter?
Though I cannot know,
I am glad you are here.
I love to see you
the sun glistening
off your snow-white wings
and snow-white body
as you fly slowly,
wings beating rhythmically,
acrobat in the sky,
and then you soar,
floating motionless in mid-air,
then up and up
and down and down.
Your ringing laughter
calls out
with such seeming joy
as if to say to me –
earthbound –
that you know the delight
of flight,
a delight
I may never know,
a freedom
I may never see.
Oh, seagull,
I welcome you back
each winter,
and I lament your leaving
each spring,
but your joyous laughter
calling out
as you dip and soar
will stay with me
and even though
you come and go
like the seasons,
a part of you –
your ringing laughter,
your joy,
and your spirit –
will abide with me
